Although we’re in the business of selling clothes, we understand that consumerism is tricky. On one hand, it can be blamed for a host of societal ills, like our Sisyphean existence of aspiring to have more (and more and more) with little long-term satisfaction. On the other, what we consume defines our culture, including film, art, music, and fashion. The point being, American capitalism has shaped the way we live for better or for worse.

However, our Buy American T-shirt isn’t meant to highlight the good we’ve contributed, but to remind us of the two largest evils that have thrived in our culture: sugar and tobacco. Both have been destructive for centuries—from our history of using slave labor to cultivate them to the physical and mental toll they take on people through addiction.
