The Heavyweight Hoodie - Cover

The Heavyweight Hoodie

It’s an American invention born, as many are, of necessity. The hooded sweatshirt as we know it emerged in 1930’s upstate New York as a practical solution to frigid conditions for warehouse laborers. In the years since, the hoodie has come to occupy that thoroughly contemporary space where familiarity, utility, and narratives collide. Deep working class roots haven’t stopped it from being endlessly appropriated and, at times, debated in extremely bad faith. Everyone, it seems, has an opinion about what a hoodie means.

Our new Heavyweight Hoodie cuts through the ambiguity by highlighting the form’s most essential qualities. We’ve jettisoned the standard kangaroo pocket, finding inspiration in mid-century military and school uniform models with paired, individual pockets. These reduce bulk at the midriff, leading to a wider, shorter, and slightly boxier fit. To further strip down construction, we eliminated overlock seams and the drawcord hood closure. Finally, and we cannot stress this enough, it is heavy, over 100 GSM beyond our customary, cotton sweat.

It’s not a deconstruction, exactly, but rather a return to those elemental traits that define a classic. Which means also a return to the elements, full outdoor days packed into short windows of light followed by cold, enduring nights. A return to labor and lives that are rooted in movement, the sort that internal layers, or thick, tough jackets can restrict. It’s a hoodie that stands alone as precisely what it is.

As the garment’s materials and structure take center stage, visible Noah branding recedes to embroidery just above the substantial cuff of the left sleeve, at once subtle and indelible.
